Haleen Lee works across painting, photography and publishing, taking architectural apertures as his subject.
Windows, corridors, stairwells. These are the parts of a building deliberately cut open — for the exchange of light, air and sound, or for passage into another space — and they are the only points where inside and outside actually meet. Lee paints them and removes everything else: the wall, the furniture, the view that should be visible through the opening. Stripped of context, the structure stops depicting a place elsewhere and enters the room the viewer is standing in. The painting is not a window onto something. It is a threshold, here.
Borderless carries out this method in paint. Symmetrical division lifted from architectural elevation orders the picture, and a carefully weighted void set inside it is where the tension collects — yeobaek, the active void; symmetry is the frame that lets it work. Frame and ground are tuned so they cannot be separated at a glance. Because it is unsettled where a form begins and ends, the viewer has to come closer and look for it. That delay is the pace the work is built for. The palette is held to a narrow, low-saturation band; the ground colour sets the hour and mood of each work, like light coming from behind the frame.
The Magazine extends the method into photography and publishing. Its structure is borrowed from the comp card — the fashion industry's most functional document, which reduces a person to a full-length photograph and a list of measurements. Where the numbers stood, The Magazine places painting. Participants are photographed full-length, with styling left entirely to them; the shapes and colours their clothing and bodies produce are extracted, rebuilt as painting and set beside the photographs. Laid out in sequence, the pairs cohere into a typological record, published as an art book of 100 participants. The project continues beyond that number.
